THE WORD OF THE WEEK IS FLUCTUATE.  The word comes from Latin meaning “to flow”.  Synonyms for fluctuate include “waver,” “oscillate,” “mutate,” and “vary.”  You can change fluctuate from a verb to a noun by adding the suffix “tion” as in, “Mood fluctuations affect the body by increasing stress hormones in the brain.”  Often the word describes a movement that is irregular but sometimes the movement can be more of a wave-like pattern.
