UNIT OBJECTIVES

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

  • Distinguish between endocrine and exocrine glands
  • Explain how hormones are thought to exert influences on target tissues
  • Name and Describe the location of the major endocrine glands of the body
  • List the hormones that each major endocrine gland secretes
  • Describe the general Functions of these hormones
  • Locate the target tissues of each hormone
  • Distinguish between too much or too little of a particular hormone for certain human diseases
  • Distinguish between physical and psychological stress
  • Describe the general stress response
  • Define the prefixes, suffixes and root words associated with this unit

STUDY TIPS

This is a difficult unit! 20 minutes of study EVERY night is necessary for you to learn all of the hormones, organs that secrete them, target tissues, and diseases. DON'T LET DOWN

  • Do the outline yourself before I go over it in class.
  • Reread the chapter.
  • Highlight your outline with the important words.
  • Go over each item as it is covered in class.
  • Learn the material a little at a time.
  • Read and highlight all articles given in class.
  • Be prepared for a quiz every day!

TEST INFORMATION--The test is divided into short answers and a multiple choice/matching portions.

  1. Questions 1-30. Given a hormone, can you name the gland, target tissue and its function?
  2. Questions 31-51 Given a disease, can you name the hormone, the gland and whether its an over or under secretion?
  3. Questions 52-68 Terminology from the lab
  4. Questions 69-83 Endocrine Diagram
  5. Questions 84-100 Microscopic endocrine gland analysis--use the lab and the photos above.

Short Answer Questions--14 different questions worth 70 points total. You need to get 50 points. Answer them all and you will receive 20 points in bonus. Be sure that you have read and highlighted all of the articles given in class. Review the importance of Fig 10.2 and 10.3 Do you know the functions of the endocrine glands? How about the differences between endocrine and exocrine glands? Just checking!!
