UNIT OBJECTIVES

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

  • Define nutrients and essential nutrients
  • List the major sources of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins
  • Describe how carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids are utilized by cells
  • Explain how various factors affect and individual's energy needs
  • List the fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins

  • List the major minerals and trace elements and list their general functions
  • Evaluate the consumption requirements and functions of a vitamin and/or mineral in your diet

PAPER TIPS (as given by former students)

  • Be sure to read ALL of the directions.
  • Then go through and determine the order in which you will complete the sections.
  • Reread the directions for each section as you work on it.
  • Go over the scoring guide so that nothing is left out.
  • ASK QUESTIONS as you work.
  • USE OUR LIBRARY--it is open Mon-Thurs from 2:15 until 7:00. There are no excuses for not using the facilities!
  • Work on some aspect of the paper everyday. DON'T GET BEHIND.

TEST INFORMATION

1-15 Questions are answered with carbohydrates, lipids, minerals, proteins, vitamins and water. Just like Jeopardy, can you give the question? Study the notes we did together in class.

16-20 and 36-40. Numbers that are involved with nutrition and diet. What do you think you would have to know?

21-35. Questions are answered with glucose, cholesterol, saturated, unsaturaed, complete, incomplete, fat soluble and water soluble. Can you think of any questions associated with these terms? Again be sure to study the notes we did together.

41-55 T and F Quesions about general nutrition. Come directly from the internet readings. Have you read the nutritional background information.

56-65. Vitamin and minerals. Look over the chart and study major highlights of each vitamin and major mineral.

66-75. Diseases. You have a list that you did as a group. Maybe you should make flash cards.

30 points in Constructed Response, including a diet day error analysis.
