ELOs in Action
Below are examples of extended learning opportunities students are participating in or have completed.
SM Wilson Job Shadow
SM Wilson hosted a job shadow where two Pattonville High School seniors toured work sites as well as SM Wilson's offices, focusing on construction and construction management careers.
ENVO ELO
One of Pattonville High School's seniors is creating a prototype scanner called ENVO. The vision for this project is to develop a scanner that identifies recyclable materials. This video demonstrates the early stage development of the scanner's technology.
Project Pave ELO
Sophia participated in Project Pave, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Program. Project Pave mentors, teaches and supports students attending targeted St. Louis North County high schools. The goal is to create interest in and pursuit of heavy highway design, engineering, and construction careers. Sophia's participation in Project Pave led into an internship with Millstone-Weber.
SLU Wind Tunnel ELO
In a partnership with Dr. McQuilling at St. Louis University, AJ analyzes images to try to figure out where shockwaves occur within the wind tunnel in an effort to determine how shockwaves affect the performance of jet engines.
Independent Course Work
Continue to learn in an area when there isn't a scheduled course available.
Myla and Savannah worked on a Yale & Washington University joint research project. Myla and Savannah met with research assistants to work on a Genome project that centers around minority groups. The project was a year-long and included a book study and discussion panels.
Past Extended Learning Opportunities with Pattonville High School Students
Internship
A temporary, unpaid position where a student is paired with a professional in the community to gain practical experience
Career Exploration
Opportunity for a student to investigate a specific occupation or career path. Conduct research, interviews, and job shadows
Parker is working with Pattonville technology staff to develop an app that serves as an interactive map and schedule finder for PHS
Project Based Learning
Learning experience where the student gains a deeper knowledge of a topic of their choice by solving a real-world problem
In addition to being in Mrs. Schwendemann’s science class, students participated in an ELO in which they researched and built a solar oven and then presented to Pattonville Elementary Schools on their process.
Pattonville Completed ELO
Senior student interested in technology worked with the technology aides or library specialist at Holman, Heights, and Remington. He presented to the panel in December and was granted 1/2 elective school credit.
This same student worked with Pattonville's Director of Technology second semester gaining experience with hardware and earned his Apple certified Mac Technician Certification and Apple Service Certificate. He presented to the panel in May and was granted 1/2 elective credit.
